After undergraduate study, practitioners of Oriental Medicine enroll in a graduate professional master's program which is 3 to 4 academic years in length.  Graduates must pass both final comprehensive exams in all areas of Oriental Medicine, which include basic and clinical medical sciences, and have to pass rigorous national board examinations to receive their license.

Oriental Medicine is a complete system of medicine with a unique diagnosis system, and in which a treatment is built into the diagnosis.  In addition to acupuncture and herbal formulas, several other techniques are sometimes employed such as cupping and moxibustion.  Nutrition is also an integral part of a treatment program, as food is also medicine.

his system of medicine has been developed and refined over 2,500 years, originating in China, with the first accredited training program reaching the US in the 1970's. While there are many diverse techniques and schools of thought within the field, all include a holistic focus on the patient with individualized treatment protocols.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), acupuncture effectively treats nearly 30 conditions and has been shown to be therapeutic for over 60 additional conditions.  It is an integrated therapy in many other countries and is growing at a rapid rate here in the US.

How does acupuncture work?

Humans are made of more that what is visible to the naked eye or any microscope. We also are filled with energy, called Qi, that courses through our body in channels.  When in perfect health, the energy is balanced and flowing freely and abundantly.  Disease is an imbalance within our bodies, and an acupuncturist employs very thin, disposable, stainless steel needles at specific points along our energy channels to help the body's ability to correct the imbalance.

What are Chinese herbs?

Instead of drugs, an acupuncturist trained in Chinese herbs uses substances found in nature from the plant, animal, and mineral kingdom to treat imbalances at a more internal level than acupuncture.  Usually the herbs are cooked and the liquid drunk or taken in tablet or capsule form.
